CHAPTER SIX

That night, Jake was in turmoil. After all these years he mused, shaking his head. He felt as close to Shona as ever. How was it possible? It had been more than half a lifetime since they’d last set eyes on each other. Even then, back then, they had known each other for only a couple of years. How was it possible he could feel like this now?

A cynic would have the answer, of course, he thought ruefully. A cynic would say something like, ‘Of course you feel like that! She reminds you of your youth.’

It was true. She did. He grinned mirthlessly and admitted it. Shona reminded him of his youth. But with her, he had actually felt young again. Her husband was a lucky man.

On her way home Shona was happy and excited. She was thrilled! She felt young again, or, if not that exactly, she felt as if seeing Jake again had built a bridge to earlier, happier times, times when the world and life were waiting to be explored.

Jake! The astonishing thing was he was hardly any different. Oh, he looked a little older—of course he did—but not all that much, and in his ways and mannerisms, and how he thought and talked, he was just the same as ever. It had all come back to her, how he was. The way he walked along, head on one side and his hands in his pockets, as if all the world were his to observe.

Just past Harbottle, she turned right on to the road that ran past Holystone, to make a little detour. She wasn’t ready to go home yet. She needed a little time to get used to an extraordinary evening. She needed to calm down.

Near Debdon Whiteside she pulled off the road on to a patch of sheep-nibbled grass and sat staring down at the lakes in the old gravel quarries below.

Jake seemed to live as she might have expected. It was like a grown-up version of his student life. Extraordinary. Wandering around the world, espousing causes, living independently, just as he always had done.

As a student, he’d done more than most to keep out of the mainstream. He’d worked and worked hard, but not much on his actual courses. He had developed his own programme of studies. That had been respected by his tutor and some of the lecturers, if not much by the elderly mad professor, laughingly called Head of Department.

She smiled fondly. He really hadn’t changed. Not a bit! And it was wonderful to know that. Reluctantly, she re-started the car and headed home. Time to return to reality.

It was late. She was late. But she was the first one home. The house was in darkness. She frowned as she let herself in. She couldn’t really complain, not tonight when she was a bit late herself, but she didn’t like it. Tom had always had a couple of late nights a week with the Leek Club and the darts team. She was used to that.
